"Transition of electric cars is to ensure energy sovereignty" Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced during his meeting with Kana Television, that the transition to electric cars is not just a technological choice but a strategic decision aimed at ensuring Ethiopia's energy security. The Prime Minister stated that Ethiopia is not an oil producing country and emphasized that the only option to deal with the effects of global oil price fluctuations and geopolitical conflicts on the country's economy is to turn to renewable energy. "Even if the cost of fuel and electricity are equal in terms of prices, electric cars are preferred," said the Prime Minister, and the reason is that the energy is produced in the country, so there is no risk of being "shut down" like fuel, which ensures energy sovereignty. He explained that this transition not only saves a lot of foreign currency spent on buying fuel, but the fact that the cars are quiet and noiseless is of great benefit to the environment and reducing the burden on citizens. Despite initial complaints, the move was a "smart strategy" chosen to reduce the impact of sudden international crises on citizens' lives and the country's economy, the prime minister said. He pointed out that at a time when oil prices are rising globally and the Strait of Hormuz is threatened, Ethiopia's transition to electric cars will play a key role in the country's security.
